Woodward: Easley Gone Because of Economic Downturn

06.11.2009 | Posted by Cherry Crayton | Filed under Campus News | Tags: Chancellor, Jim Woodward, Mary Easley, Resignation |

Here’s the text of the termination letter that interim Chancellor Jim Woodward sent to Mary Easley, dated June 10:

Dear Mrs. Easley:

As you are aware, the recent economic downturn has caused a substantial reduction in the financial support the University has received from the state and a substantial reduction in the support we expect to receive in the coming years.  In an effort to address this loss of funding, the University will eliminate or severely reduce some of the programs it offers.  Programs that you were hired to administer or in which you were expected to participate are among those that will be eliminated or severely reduced.  Accordingly, and after taking into consideration the advice of the North Carolina State University Board of Trustees provided on June 8, 2009, I have decided to terminate your contract as of close of business on June 10, 2009.

I regret the necessity of this action.  Of course, should you have any questions about your insurance and retirement contributions, please contact the Benefits office directly at 515-2151.

Very truly yours,

James H. Woodward
Chancellor

Mrs. Easly was fired because of corruption within the UNC system and at NC STATE. I wonder if any wandering eyes will look at other high profile, well paid higherings at other UNC schools as I am certain it is there too.

This is not even PC, it’s just downright not true. Is this the only way they could word it to NOT have to pay her the remainder of her contract? (If so, then I support it mildly. Clearly, she doesn’t have the tact to not accept it on her own at this point.)
