Photos from Homecoming 2009

11.09.2009

Thanks to everybody who supported Homecoming 2009. Below we’ve got photos of the activities throughout the week, from Wear Red Get Fed and Paint the Town to the Homecoming parade and the halftime festivities at Saturday’s football game. And what a great way to end Homecoming, with NC State beating Maryland 38-31!

Homecoming Parade is Today!

11.06.2009

“Who doesn’t love a parade?” So asks Kellie Harper, the Wolfpack women’s basketball coach and grand marshal of the 2009 Homecoming Parade. It begins today at about 6 p.m. and will travel along Hillsborough Street. Come out and join Coach Harper and us for some fun! “It’s a time when everybody is excited about their university and what is going on,” Coach Harper says. “To rally around the football team – I love it.” The lineup will feature NC State coaches and athletic teams, cheerleaders, the university dance team, The Power Sound of the South and other local bands, student-sponsored floats, vintage cars and more.

NC State’s home page also has a lot of great coverage of Homecoming, including the above video of Cassius Williams ’69, former president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors who was instrumental in bringing back Homecoming to NC State.

In the early ’70s, the Homecoming celebrations that brought Cassius Williams ’69 back to campus were “great fun.” “Homecoming back then was a big deal,” Williams said. . . . Then it all stopped — and strangely, nobody seemed to know why. But ask how Homecoming returned, and you’ll likely hear “because of Cassius Williams.”

And don’t forget the Pack Howl Pep Rally and Concert tonight, which will feature the band Roman Candle and the CollegeHumor Live Tour. It begins at 7 p.m. on Harris Field.

After the jump, check out the photos that we’ve taken during Homecoming week so far.

Photos from National Wolfpack Service Day

10.26.2009

Hundreds of members of the Wolfpack family from across the state and nation spent their Saturday participating in service projects ranging from planting flowers and digging trenches to collecting food and writing letters to troops as part of National Wolfpack Service Day. We took photos from some of the activities in Wake County, where we worked at six sites, including at Pullen Park, where alumni planted 3,384 pansies (photos above). We want your photos  from National Wolfpack Service Day, too! E-mail them to alumniblog@gw.ncsu.edu. Click here to see the full listing of service projects that the Pack completed. Thanks for your service!

A Letter from the Alumni Association Board of Directors

10.23.2009

The NC State Alumni Association Board of Directors has released this letter following a change in leadership at the organization:

Dear NC State Alumni,

The decision of Chancellor James Woodward to end the employment of NC State Alumni Association Executive Director Dr. Lennie Barton is being received with a great deal of sadness by many NC State alumni. Dr. Barton faithfully, ably and enthusiastically served our Alumni Association and NC State for more than 30 years, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership. The officers and board of directors of the NC State Alumni Association recognize that Chancellor Woodward, in reaching this decision to end the employment of Dr. Barton, heard and considered many points of view, and that his decision was made with a great deal of thought and careful deliberation. We respect the chancellor’s authority to make decisions regarding the employment of his senior staff members, such as Dr. Barton.

Kevin Howell Named Alumni Association’s Interim Leader

10.16.2009

howell_113board2Kevin Howell ’88 has been named interim associate vice chancellor for alumni relations and executive director of the NC State University Alumni Association.

Chris Simms '05 shows off his National Wolfpack Service Day T-shirt.

National Wolfpack Service Day is Oct. 24. It’s a great opportunity for you to represent the NC State family and serve your community. There will be alumni volunteering this year in Washington, D.C., California, Minnesota, New York and around North Carolina. There are half a dozen places in Wake County where you can volunteer. Our Baltimore network will serve on Oct. 25. Check out our events calendar for details on locations and projects.

Some networks have already served in their communities. Chris Simms ’05 and the members of the Phoenix, Ariz.-area network helped out at a walk held recently by the ALS Association of Arizona (more pictures after the jump).

Visit our networks page to learn more about how you can connect with Wolfpackers in your area. (more…)

N&O on Alumni Association Leadership Change

10.13.2009

From this morning’s N&O:

N.C. State University’s interim chancellor has fired the head of the alumni association, saying the group was struggling financially and its membership had been stagnant for years.

Interim Chancellor James Woodward told the association’s board of directors Friday afternoon about his decision to fire Dr. Lennie Barton, an associate vice chancellor.

An Announcement from Chancellor Woodward

10.12.2009

As some of you have perhaps heard by now, a change in the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations/Executive Director of the Alumni Association will take place immediately. The decision to make this change was made by me following extensive discussions with our Trustees and others and based on a careful and thorough evaluation of the organization and especially the trends, financial and otherwise, now underway. I firmly believe that new leadership is needed if the defined mission and purpose of the Alumni Association are to be successfully pursued in the years ahead.

Like many of you, I appreciate the many contributions that Lennie Barton ’77, ’81 MS, ’87 DED has made to NC State and the Alumni Association during his long career at NC State, and wish him well as he pursues future endeavors.

NC State’s best years are ahead, and I invite all alumni to help build a stronger and more vibrant Alumni Relations program and Alumni Association in support of your university. Thank you.

Jim Woodward
Chancellor
