Management Provides Inside Look at Student Experience

10.21.2009

The folks in the College of Management are doing some interesting things with social media to provide an inside look into the student experience. The MBA program is doing a video project (above) documenting the experiences of a handful of current students. MBA students Carl Turner and Ryan Mills are blogging (Ryan is spending the fall semester in Denmark). And students in the master of accounting program also are writing about their experiences.

Not to be outdone are economics professor Craig Newmark and finance professor Richard Warr, both of whom post frequently to their blogs.

Dog

Cinco, a Husky, wears the Spotlight device on his collar.

Here’s a story out of the College of Management for all you pet owners. Two of  its aumni — Chris Newton ’98 and Lewis Sheats ’01 — have formed Positioning Animals Worldwide (PAW). The company’s first product? The Spotlight GPS Pet Locator system. And yes, it does just what its name suggests:

Its core component is a two and a half ounce electronic device that attaches to the dog’s collar. The device is always on, allowing the owner to continuously monitor a pet’s location via the Spotlight website.

Sheats said that the idea for the system came about as he and Newton were thinking of ways to keep their dogs safe and locate them if they got lost. (more…)

Jim Owens

How did Jim Owens ’68, ’70 MT, ’73 PHD — the College of Management’s 2009 Person of the Year — go from being a kid with low expectations to becoming the CEO of Caterpillar, a Fortune 500 company? He tells you in a first-person account that recently ran in The New York Times.
