Wolf Treks Travel: Passion Play at Oberammergau

passionplay_to1Performed just once a decade in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau, the Passion Play, right, began in 1633. After the bubonic plague ravaged central Europe, the ruling council of Obergammergau declared that no one could enter the village. This worked for a short time, but the plague returned with an infected, exiled laborer. People began to die. To seek relief, villagers performed the Passion Play on a stage built over the graves of plague victims. After the performance, the deaths decreased, and the survivors vowed to reenact the play every 10 years in perpetuity. During the last year of each decade, it’s performed for five months on one of the world’s largest open stages. It involves more than 2,000 performers, musicians and stage technicians, all Oberammergau residents.

Our Wolf Treks travelers who visited Egypt in late March and early April gave the trip excellent reviews. The group adored their tour guide, Tarek Morsey. “He was amazing, both in his knowledge of the antiquities and his people skills,” wrote one traveler in her post-trip survey. Another traveler called him a “walking encyclopedia.” An experienced and knowledgeable tour guide can take  a trip from good to excellent, and Tarek went the extra mile in helping our travelers get the most out of this trip.
