Wolf Treks Travel: Passion Play at Oberammergau
Performed just once a decade in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau, the Passion Play, right, began in 1633. After the bubonic plague ravaged central Europe, the ruling council of Obergammergau declared that no one could enter the village. This worked for a short time, but the plague returned with an infected, exiled laborer. People began to die. To seek relief, villagers performed the Passion Play on a stage built over the graves of plague victims. After the performance, the deaths decreased, and the survivors vowed to reenact the play every 10 years in perpetuity. During the last year of each decade, it’s performed for five months on one of the world’s largest open stages. It involves more than 2,000 performers, musicians and stage technicians, all Oberammergau residents.
During our June 13-21 Wolf Treks trip, travelers will see the Passion Play as well as cruise (more…)
