I spent some time with C.J. Williams the other week and came away from our chat thinking exactly what Dan Wiederer writes this morning in The Fayetteville Observer: Williams, just a sophomore, could emerge as a team leader this season.
Lowe now wants his sophomore shooting guard to showcase his heightened confidence to not only become a reliable playmaker but an energizing force for the whole team.
“C.J. knows the right things to say and the right things to do, there’s no question about that” Lowe said. “Now will he emerge as a leader? I’m not sure yet. He absolutely knows the right way. But the other part about being a leader is you have to do it the right way every time. As a leader, I can’t tell you not to take that bad shot if I’m taking bad shots. I can’t tell you to stop turning it over if I’m turning it over. If you’re going to talk the talk, you better walk the walk.”
We’ll have an article on Williams in the Winter issue of NC State magazine. h/t to Pack Pride poster rcaseyf.

Who needs Midnight Madness when you’ve got the Red Rally? Come out to Reynolds Coliseum Friday night to help the Wolfpack men and women kick off the 2009-10 basketball season.
Doors open at 6 p.m. The NC State volleyball team takes on Wake Forest at 7 p.m., and basketball starts at 9 p.m. There will be short scrimmages by both teams, a dunk contest, a 3-point contest that will include a fan, giveaways and more. NC State Athletics also will collect donations to benefit the NTAF South Atlantic Spinal Cord Injury Fund in honor of former men’s basketball player Brian Keeter ’03. NC State Web Communications published a story on Keeter this week on ncsu.edu.
And don’t forget, you MUST wear red to get in. Go Pack!

From the N&O, a story about Michael Phillips and the Kay Yow corn maze he created at his family’s Cary farm:
There are corn mazes. And then there are corn monuments.
Michael Phillips would like to show you the difference.
In June, he planted some seeds. In August, he began cutting. Last month, he unveiled his memorial: Kay Yow meticulously rendered in a swath of tall stalks and bumpy pathways.
He didn’t know of a better way to honor a legend.
A portion of the $10 admission fee goes to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. WRAL featured the Phillips farm in August and had a quick flyover shot of the field. You can see the video here.

The induction ceremony for the newest members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will be Friday in Springfield, Mass. Among this year’s class will be a Tar Heel, Michael Jordan. So why’s this worth a post on an NC State blog? Because Jordan has asked Wolfpack great David Thompson ’75 to present him during the induction ceremony. As Yahoo! Sports reports:
“I got a call from the Hall of Fame and they asked me if I was willing to be a presenter for someone,” Thompson recently told Yahoo! Sports. “I said, ‘Yeah.’ I didn’t know who it was. . . . They said Michael Jordan. I was like, ‘Wow.’ He told them that he was a big fan of mine and I was the one that really inspired him. Being that there was so many North Carolina people he could’ve chose, I was honored.
The N&O’s Caulton Tudor has a nice writeup about it today, with a good dose of ACC history.

I was looking for some information on NC State football this afternoon and came across an NCSU Libraries site — NC State Sports, Illustrated — with lots of great images of football and basketball programs from 1931 to 1972. From the looks of it, the site has been around a while, but this is the first time I’ve seen it. Check out a half dozen other covers after the jump. And if you’re wondering why there’s a Martian on the Clemson/State program, the NCSU Libraries site attributes it to “the nation’s fascination with outer space.” (more…)
