How Do I Start an Alumni Club?

The success of a new club depends on a small nucleus of dedicated and enthusiastic alumni. It takes commitment and time to breathe life and build structure into a club, elements that will ensure its longevity.

The NC State Alumni Association is eager to assist an alumnus or group of alumni in establishing a new club. The following are helpful
suggestions for organizing or reorganizing an Alumni Club:

Contact the Alumni Association

Contact the Alumni Association for a list of names and addresses of alumni currently residing in the proposed club territory. The staff will work with you to ensure that your proposed club area doesn’t encroach on an existing club. Our phone number is 919.515.3375 or toll-free in the United States at 800.627.2586. Or send an e-mail to alumnionline@ncsu.edu.

Providing you have an adequate concentration of alumni, the staff will work with you to send a postcard or e-mail to gauge alumni interest in forming a club. The notice will include a form or Web address where people can indicate levels and activities of interest.

After assessing the responses and talking with the staff, you are ready to identify a core group of alumni who can launch the club, providing the initial structure and planning activities.

Select Club Officers

In selecting club officers, consideration should be given to community standing (a well-known community leader or businessperson who knows many people), availability and commitment to NC State University.

Once the leadership and mission of the club is outlined, the officers should work with the Alumni Association staff to plan and host the first official event. ALL club officers should be dues-paying members of the Alumni Association.

Organize Events

The scope and number of events that you organize should relate directly to the number of alumni in your area. The more alumni you have, the more frequently you should plan events and vary the activity.

Activities could include: family picnics, game-viewing gatherings, community-service projects, student recruitment activities, senior
send-offs and mentoring.

Promote the Alumni Association and NC State

Increasing membership in the Alumni Association must be an activity untaken by ALL Alumni Clubs.

These steps will ensure that all volunteers are committed to forming a successful club built on a solid foundation that will endure. Club formation that does not follow these steps often results in failure and drains Alumni Association resources from successful clubs.

Potential areas of club programming are:

  • Connections: social gatherings, sport-related activities, cultural activities
  • Networking: career programming, lifelong education, mentoring, group travel
  • University image enhancement: community service, student recruitment, legislative advocacy
