Goodbye to Riddick
Follow the progress of construction crews tearing down landmark Riddick Stadium.
The stadium was erected in 1907 after alumni and students raised money to install wooden bleechers and a grandstand behind the dormitories. It was named after Wallace Carl Riddick, a popular mathematics professor who served as football coach in 1888-1889 and went on to become NC State’s fourth president in 1916. Gradually, weast and east stands and a field house were added, bringing the seating capacity to 20,000. The stadium hosted home Wolfpack football and baseball games until 1966, when Carter-Finley opened. The field was paved for a visitors’ parking lot, and the stands and field house were converted to offices for facilities management and campus police.
Demolition of the stands to make room for classrooms and a utility plant began in October, 2003. This fall, the demolition will be complete.
