The Alumni Association on March 11 honored four graduating seniors with the 2007-08 Mathews Medal. Chancellor James L. Oblinger (center) presented the medals. Awardees are, from left, Zachary Adams, Sarah Kim, Kate Luckadoo and Christopher Carter.

The Mathews Medalists are honored for their outstanding service and leadership at NC State.

Zachary Adams ‘08 served as the 2007-08 Senior Class president, Student Senate president and chair of the Campus Community Committee that worked on issues such as seniors’ access to football and basketball tickets, online ticket distribution and tailgating hours. A member of Sigma Chi fraternity, he was a representative for the University Tuition Advisory Committee, chair of the Inter-Fraternity Council Judicial Board, a member of the NC State crew team and the sole student member of the NC State Information Technology Scoping Team that outlined the university’s new chief information officer position in 2007.

Christopher Carter ‘08 was president and charter member of Sigma Alpha Pi, a society for leadership and success. He served as vice president of the Society of African American Corporate Leaders and treasurer for the Society of African American Culture. As a resident adviser for Bragaw Hall, he initiated two traditions: the “Westcappuchino” coffee-and-talent show and “West Campus Jam,” a concert featuring local bands and talent. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the University Peer Mentor Program and the NC State Alumni Association Student Ambassador Program, serving as chair of the Homecoming Pack Howl Concert committee.

Sarah Kim ‘08, a Park Scholar, was co-founder of NC State’s Energy Awareness Week, now part of campus Earth Day events, and founder of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Undergraduate Journal Club. Active in Student Government, she was a representative to the President’s Roundtable and founder and chair of the Student Diversity Advisory Council, which established an annual Diversity Symposium, the NC State Diversity Awards and diversity dialogues on campus. Kim also served as budget chair and site liaison for Service Raleigh and co-team leader for the Guatemala Health Issues Alternative Spring Break trip.

Kate Luckadoo ‘08, a Caldwell Fellow, was Student Government chief of staff, serving as a top adviser to the student body president and as student liaison for the Undergraduate Student Transition Task Force. She was a service leadership consultant for the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service and vice president of the Order of 30&3, where she promoted one of NC State’s most unique campus traditions and worked to honor successful students who serve the university. Luckadoo was a founding member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, a resident adviser, new student orientation counselor and member of the First Year College Council.

The Mathews Medal is modeled after the Watauga Medal, which honors NC State alumni who’ve made significant contributions to the advancement of the university. It’s named for Walter J. Mathews (1893), the first student enrolled in the N.C. College of Agriculture & Mechanic Arts in 1889.

The Mathews Medal was created and administered by the Alumni Association Student Ambassador Program.
