National Wolfpack Service Day 2008

NC State Alumni Clubs across the country will volunteer in their communities on (or around) Oct. 11, 2008. We want all clubs to show their Wolfpack pride by getting involved this year. E-mail Astra Barnes 03, director of outreach and engagement, at astra_barnes@ncsu.edu to get ideas for National Wolfpack Service Day 2008.
Some of this year’s projects, which are listed by date in the 2008 events calendar.
The Atlanta Alumni Network will participate in the Oct. 18 Bowl for Kids’ Sake, the second largest annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. Proceeds will help make mentor-child matches and transform the lives of boys and girls through positive, professionally supported relationships.
The Baltimore Alumni Club will help restore the Jones Falls Watershed by planting trees and / or removing invasive plants.
The Beaufort Alumni Club will organize a “Support our Troops” letter-writing event and deliver notes / photos to our men and women at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Guilford Alumni Club will collect food for Urban Ministry at its game-viewing parties, which are scheduled for all away games.
The Mecklenburg Alumni Network will work as race-day volunteers for the Oct. 4 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
The Minneapolis Alumni Club will volunteer on Oct. 11 with The Goodwill Project, assisting with merchandising in one of the 13 metro-wide Goodwill stores.
The Nashville (Tenn.) Alumni Club will raise funds for CASA Inc. through the Oct. 13 Annual ACC vs. SEC Alumni Golf Tournament, a competition between local ACC and SEC alumni. CASA provides volunteer advocates for children whove come to the attention of the court due to abuse and neglect.
The San Francisco Bay Alumni Club will volunteer Oct. 11 on two projects: preparing and serving meals to the needy at Martin de Porres House of Hospitality and helping with restoration activities at San Francisco Bay.
The Tampa Alumni Club will help set up Oct. 11 for the Museum of Science and Industry’s annual orientation celebration of the YES! (Youth Enriched by Science) Team. This intensive, multi-year program offers training opportunities and paid employment to underserved minority youth.
The Tri-State Alumni Club will deliver meals to the elderly on Oct. 11 through City Meals on Wheels.
The Wake County Alumni Club will clean, unpack, sort and arrange building materials on Oct. 11 at the Habitat for Humanity Restore.
Some of last year’s projects
The Atlanta Alumni Club volunteered with a Habitat for Humanity project.
The Baltimore Alumni Club teamed up with the area’s Carolina (UNC-Chapel Hill) Alumni Club to volunteer at Our Daily Bread Employment Center and Soup Kitchen.
The Beaufort County Alumni Club held a “Support Our Troops” letter-writing event and ensured delivery of the messages.
The Charleston Alumni Club collected goods for troops who were based in South Carolina and serving in Afghanistan.
The Capital Area Alumni Club participated in DC Light the Night n support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Volunteers helped with registration, food booths, water stops, entertainment, photography, balloon distribution, setup and takedown, greeting and cheering at the finish line.
The Guilford County Alumni Club collected food for Urban Ministry at all of its game-viewing parties in September and early October.
The Mecklenburg County Alumni Club volunteered in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure as race monitors, refreshment staff and in other positions.
The Nashville, Tenn., Alumni Club hosted the first ACC vs. SEC Golf Tournament to benefit Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity.
The New York-Tristate Alumni Club joined “Street Project” in revitalizing Brook Park, a small Bronx park that’s been cared for by Friends of Brook Park.
The Tampa Alumni Club helped the staff at Lowry Park Zoo with animal care, horticulture and amusement rides.
The Wake County Alumni Club helped Habitat for Humanity organize and clean one of its storage warehouses.
