Three seniors receive the 2009 Mathews Medal

Administered by the Alumni Association’s Student Ambassador Program, the Mathews Medal is the student equivalent of the Watauga Medal, the university’s highest nonacademic honor.
NC State awarded Mathews Medals to three seniors on March 9 for their leadership and service to the university. Click here to see past winners of the Mathews Medal.
This year’s recipients are:

ANNA PATTON
Hometown: Clayton
Major: Psychology and Spanish
Activities: Tutor with Academic Support Program for Student Athletes; founding sister of the Epsilon Eta chapter of NC State’s Delta Delta Delta; member of the Golden Chain Honor Society, National Residence Hall Honorary and the Hugh Shelton Leadership Center
Favorite memory: Being named the Female Leader of the Pack during Homecoming 2007
Plans: Pursue a master’s in higher education and student affairs
JOHN COOPER ELIAS
Hometown: Nashville, Tenn.
Major: Communication
Activities: editor in chief of Agromeck, NC State’s yearbook; member of the Student Wolfpack Club’s board of directors, University Council on Athletics and Society for College Journalists
Favorite memory: Seeing the Bell Tower lit up red for the first time
Plans: Work in media relations for a college or professional sports team
SARA YASIN
Hometown: Raleigh
Major: International Studies and Textiles and Apparel Management
Activities: Caldwell Fellow; creator and coordinator of the Women’s Center’s Behind the Veil program, which educates non-Muslims about the concept of the veil in Islam; volunteer with SATELLITE, an organization that promotes science and technology education to high school students in rural North Carolina; Student Government senator; new-student orientation counselor; president of the Student Center’s board of directors; and member of Kappa Tau Beta and Textiles Student Council
Favorite memory: Working with high-school students through SATELITTE, especially helping promote science and technology education and, in many cases, being the first Muslim woman the students have met
Plans: Pursue a master’s in international development
