Join Us For The Senior Send-Off In Your Area

Remember your summer before college? You were probably excited about living on your own, nervous about grades. The same is true for members of the Class of 2012, arriving on campus this fall. Let’s give them a warm Wolfpack welcome in their home counties. Alumni are encouraged to attend! Check our list of send-offs.

Lennie Barton Inducted Into Phi Kappa Phi

Lennie Barton ‘77, ‘81 MS, ‘87 DED, executive director of the Alumni Association, was inducted on March 26 into Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society that recognizes excellence across academic disciplines. Barton earned three NC State degrees: a bachelor’s in textile technology, a master’s in business management and a doctor of education. As a student athlete, he represented the university in golf, garnering three-year Academic All-Conference honors and playing in ACC and NCAA championships. Barton has dedicated his 30-year career to advancing NC State, first at the College of Textiles and, since 2003, at the Alumni Association.

Alumni Association Awards Faculty

News From The Caldwell Fellows Program

About a dozen Caldwell Fellows passed up the usual Spring Break vacation to undertake a service project and cultural immersion trip to Puebla, Mexico. During their March Alternative Spring Break trip (see photos), Fellows taught art in a public elementary school and gave out toothbrushes and toothpaste. They also met with the Grupo Punto student leadership program at a local private university, UPAEP, and will host the same group at NC State in August. At the invitation of the Center for International Understanding, the Caldwell Fellows attended a dinner with Mexican and North Carolina business leaders, educators and government representatives.

Several senior Caldwells have received major award recognitions. Jennifer Boyd was awarded a National Science Foundation grant for graduate study. Brian Clark and Megan Chesser received honorable mentions. Kate Luckadoo was named a 2008 Mathews Medal winner. Program alumnus Josh Humphries ‘95, a lecturer at Harvard, received the annual Caldwell Fellows Legacy Award and addressed the Fellows on making a positive difference in the community after leaving NC State.

Also this spring, senior Nick Schultz was diagnosed with leukemia. The Caldwell Fellows and NC State have rallied around Nick, organizing support for him and his family (view Technician’s online audio slide show) and arranging an April 14 bone marrow donor registry drive. If you would like to assist Nick, contact The Caldwell Fellows program at 919-515-3837 or e-mail Janice Odom at janice_odom@ncsu.edu.

New Caldwells and Retreat: Twenty-nine first-year students have been chosen from among 52 finalists as the Class of 2011 Caldwell Fellows.

Their names, majors and hometowns are listed on the Caldwells Web site. A retreat, facilitated by senior Caldwells, gave incoming students a chance to get to know one another, learn more about the program and perform a cleanup at Falls Lake, the drinking water supply for Wake County. Among the new freshmen, two have already secured prestigious NASA internships for summer 2008; another was among 15 designers whose work was featured in NC State’s competitive Art to Wear fashion show.

April 25 is the Caldwell Fellows’ final monthly dinner of the year (a cookout at Pullen Park).
May 9 marks the annual senior dinner for Caldwell graduates. It will be held at the Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center.
May 24-June 30 Caldwells will travel to the Balkans and Eastern Europe for a service and cultural immersion trip.
